Purpose

To consolidate in one list all known grave sites for the soldiers from the Georgia brigade.  There were several Georgia brigades. This page refers to the Georgia brigade made up of the 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd, and 52nd Infantry regiments.

Background

This started as a desire to update the necrology list on the GBSHHA website. One prison camp led to another, and prison camps led to cemeteries, etc..

For ease of maintenance, I've consolidated the lists to one sortable list. If, for example, you wish to see a list sorted by cemetery, just click on the buried column. (It may take a few seconds to sort the list.)

Civil War News

I've started a blog of news articles I come across that may be of interest to Civil War buffs. Its 'Civil War Haversack'. (A haversack was a canvas bag, about a foot square, used to carry a soldier's rations. Before the civil war, the term was used to refer to the bag used for feeding oats to horses.)

Future Enhancements

There is no timeframe associated with these ideas:

  • Add links for the cemeteries to their own cemetery page, include address, GPS information.
  •  Conduct library research on burial sites.
  •  Research civil war burial practices.
  •  Research civil war confederate hospital system
  •  Research civil war newspaper articles.
  •  Add Cause of Death column
  •  Add last known battle column
  •  Incorporate roster information into popups
  •  Move data to MySQL.
  •  Add automation to the production of the lists to simplify updating the websites.
